Job Purpose

The K-9 Online Learning Generalist Teacher oversees all aspects of a student’s educational program, including the planning, implementation, assessment, and reporting of the program.  The K-9 O.L.  Generalist Teacher role includes collaborating with families and creating individualized programs based on the unique needs of each student and family situation.

Reporting

The K-9 O.L. Generalist Teacher directly reports to the K-9 Principal of CHEK ABC.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Be familiar with, reference  and implement the Standards for K-12 Online Learning in BC found at: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/education/administration/kindergarten-to-grade-12/online-learning/ol_standards_k12.pdf 
  2. Be familiar with CHEK ABC local policies and policy for the delivery of a K-9 program including: (Access to the CHEK ABC Master Policy Manual – online – is provided on request)
    1. Ensure that CHEK ABC policies and best practices are followed
    2. Keep up-to-date records as outlined in CHEK ABC policy
  3. Participates in all CHEK ABC online and in-person professional development, informational and training sessions as provided.
  4. Plans an educational program for each K-9 student including:
    1. Reviews student files for indication of student ability, progress, and any learning needs
    2. Conducts initial home visit/interview to gather information regarding parent choice in curriculum, third party activity options, and educational philosophy (can be on zoom or in person)
    3. Researches and suggests home based curriculum resources that would meet student needs as well as BC Ministry of Education Learning Outcomes, using our recommended resource lists.
    4. Writes Student Learning Plans/Profile (SLPs) that contain detailed and personalized information on student strengths & goals, resources, strategies and assessment procedures that will meet BC Ministry of Education Learning Outcomes. Uses the CHEK ABC SLP template. As SLP’s are organic documents, updates SLP’s as required throughout the year and as program elements change.
    5. Completes a SLP Budget/Tracking Sheet that provides a spending plan for all curriculum, activities, and materials required to fulfill the SLP. Communicate the budget to the family and update the budget as required throughout the year. Utilizes the CHEK ABC Budget template and coordinates with the financial officer.
  1. Implements an educational program for each K-9 student:
    1. Sources resources to fulfill the SLP:
      1. May work with the Librarium staff to determine resource options
      2. Encourages families to utilize the CHEK ABC Librarium
      3. Orders resources as required through the online Resource Request Form
      4. Approves resources and Third Party activities purchased for families
      5. Assist to secure Third Party activities for the student as required
      6. Ensures that all program expenses covered by CHEK ABC are paid for solely by CHEK ABC as we are not permitted to reimburse families
    2. Maintains weekly contact with students and parents/caregivers:
      1. Weekly contact is made to caregivers/parents/students by:
        1. Email
        2. In-person
        3. Phone
        4. Parent Square post or message
      2. Questions/concerns regarding course programming are addressed on a timely basis. Reports serious concerns to school administration for support and guidance
      3. Utilized school mandated communication systems/programs such as ParentSquare
  2. Assesses the K-9 educational program:
    1. Regularly collects work samples and provides meaningful feedback (minimum 1 time per month)
    2. Provides criteria, rubrics, grading scales for work required as part of the SLP as needed
    3. Collects reports from third party instructors (ie – coaches, music instructors, etc)
    4. Keeps an accurate grade book
    5. Core Competency growth is documented on the Core Competency/Big Idea Grid
  3. Reports on the educational program
    1. Writes  report cards and provides relevant grades and anecdotal comments on student progress – including progress relative to the B.C. Core Competencies
    2. Provides feedback to parents on areas of further needed development and suggestions for working towards improvement
  4. Administer tests as may be required
    1. Foundation Skills Assessments (FSA) are planned for and supervised is arranged for each grade four and seven student
    2. Canadian Achievement Tests (CAT)) and/or screening tests are requested and administered to determine student ability and/or achievement, if required
  5. Administrates and completes required paperwork in a timely manner including:
    1. Activation paperwork is completed and uploaded on the online student file
    2. Purchasing is tracked and documented on the SLP Budget Sheet
    3. Provides support on how families/students can apply for the CHEK ABC Computer Lease Program and CHEK ABC supported online subscriptions
    4. A comprehensive Gradebook is maintained
    5. Work samples are stored locally and assessed
    6. Report card comments and marks are completed and submitted to administration by the due date
    7. Final Grades are entered into MyEd B.C. by the end of the year

Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor’s of Education degree and a B.C Teaching Certificate

Experience: Experience in the Online Learning or HomeEducation field is an asset

Further experience or knowledge of the following will be helpful:

  • Homeschool curriculum knowledge
  • Technological proficiency, including Google Workspace
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Compensation & Work Expectations:  Compensation is dependent upon years of Online Learning  teaching. 40 students comprise a full time caseload. Pay grid is available upon request.
