Special Education @ Home

The Special Education @ Home Program at CHEK ABC provides students with the opportunity to learn, pursue excellence, and grow in character in the home education context. Students work at their own pace, according to their own ability, and can work towards their goals in either the School Completion Certificate program or the Dogwood Diploma.

We know that working with students with Special Needs can be rewarding but also present a number of challenges for parents and families. At CHEK ABC we have a Special Education Team ready to serve the needs of your children.

Individual Education Plans (IEP)

Each special needs student is provided with a highly individualized education plan. This plan is developed in close cooperation with the parents, teachers, and Special Education team. The IEP outlines your child’s learning needs, the services needed to support your child, and how your child’s progress will be measured.

Additional Ministry of Education Funding

The BC Ministry of Education provides extra funding for students with special needs. The Special Needs categories include: dependent handicap, deaf or blind, visual impairment or hearing impairment, moderate to profound intellectual disability, physical disability or chronic health condition, Autism Spectrum Disorder, intensive behaviour interventions or a serious mental illness. *Please note that all of these disabilities must be diagnosed by professional specialists and be fully documented.

Specialized Equipment and Services

The Ministry funding allows students to have access to specialized equipment and technological devices that will assist the student in the learning process. In addition, students will also have access to support services such as Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Language Therapy and counseling services as needed. CHEK ABC also provides Educational Assistants to work with families and students in the home learning environment.

Learning Support

At CHEK ABC we are aware that each student and every situation is unique. Some students may have difficulties with their school work even though they don’t fit into any of the BC ministry funded categories. These students may struggle because they may have Dyslexia, ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) Memory Deficits, Conceptual Deficits, Auditory Processing Deficits, Poor Work Habits, Visual Perceptual Deficits, Spatial Awareness Deficits or generally difficulties in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Speaking and Math.

CHEK ABC recognizes the importance of supporting these students and will work with each student to develop strategies to help them overcome their challenges. For example, each CHEK ABC teacher has been provided with insights and training to address each one of these challenges. The teacher, in cooperation with the parents, may prepare an Individual Support Plan for the student in less severe cases or an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students who meet Ministry of Education criteria and require adaptations.

At CHEK ABC we believe that every student should have the opportunity to be surrounded by loving people who support them as they work towards their educational goals. Our team provides excellent support for our students.
